Did I just see a giant chicken?

HAVE you ever seen a giant chicken dance?

Well Backchat has – and without the use of illegal substances.

The extraordinary sight confronted the massed ranks of the world’s travel press at a Club Med bash in Senegal, West Africa.

As the coach began to pull away from the operator’s all-inclusive village on the outskirts of Dakar, the huge nine-foot white bird with its blood red beak wandered into view, flapping its feathers and almost kicking its beanpole legs through the windscreen of the coach.

Being quick on the uptake, Backchat soon realised this was not a genuine chicken but part of a fabulous farewell by around 100 traditional Senegalese dancers who created a cacophony of noise and colour.

We were also greeted by what appeared to be a giant haystack.

Backchat also got a taste of local culture at a market in Dakar.

But sadly, even in West Africa, thousands of miles from home, there was no escaping the sight of Manchester United shirts, albeit ones that dated back to the days of Frank Stapleton and Lou Macari.

Attempts to persuade the French-speaking wearers to change their allegiance to Ouest Jambon fell on deaf ears. C’est la vie.
