swissair’s future in doubt

SWISSAIR’S
management has thrown doubt on the airline’s future by admitting that it is
“uncertain” when flights – grounded yesterday because of financial problems –
would resume.

The Swiss flag carrier
stopped flying at 12.30pm yesterday, stranding thousands of passengers at
airports all over the world.

A Swissair
spokesman said: “Despite intensive efforts throughout the day, the company has
been unable to obtain the liquidity needed to secure daily business and safe
operations. It is uncertain at this time when flight operations will resume.”

The airline’s cash shortfall threatens thousands of jobs and could also
bankrupt Belgian flag carrier Sabena, in which it owns a 49.5% share. Swissair
was due to pay Sabena £87m on Monday as part of a restructure plan, but failed
to do so.
