DUTCH flag carrier KLM is not going to renew the contracts
of 2,500 staff and scale back its winter schedule by 15%.
The airline has taken the move because of a fall in demand
following the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Centre in
the US last month.
In addition to the job cuts, the airline is in talks with
the Dutch government about cutting the hours of 12,000 employees based in the
Netherlands. It also hopes to cut the pay of employees and is holding
discussion with both unions and staff.
A statement issued by the airline said: “More far reaching
measures may have to be taken in view of the uncertainty on further
developments in the global airline industry.”
