Rhodes
Rhodes Town is divided into two. The old part is completely surrounded by a Medieval wall, with plenty to see and explore.
Outside the old town wall is a completely different story. The roads are the busiest of any Greek island and the area along the beach is built up with several high-rise hotels.
There is a tiny beach, no more than a strip of sand right by the harbour, but Elli Beach, Aquarium Beach and Windy Beach are better bets.
A popular daytrip destination is the village of Lindos, one hour by bus from Rhodes. Its attraction is two-fold – a hill-top acropolis and lots of streets selling pottery and crafts.
Boats in Rhodes Town harbour also offer daytrips including the resort of Kalithea, on the east coast, or the nearby island of Symi. Rhodes is also an international port for ferries to Bodrum in Turkey, or Limassol in Cyprus.
good for: families, history buffs and sun worshippers.
Recommendations: accommodation is expensive, with grotty hotels charging £20 per night. For the same price wander through the old town and check into a pension instead – usually the accommodation is nicer. The Aleka is very near to the port.
