Engine failure disrupts trip

ROYAL Olympic’s ship Olympic Countess lost power in one of its engines at the start of a transatlantic cruise, forcing the cruiseline to transfer passengers to another vessel.

Customers sailing to the Caribbean changed onto the Royal Olympic-owned Triton at Funchal in Madeira after the problem occurred on January 13.

Triton was sailing to Europe following the cancellation of a charter by US cruiseline Premier Cruises.

A Royal Olympic spokeswoman said Olympic Countess would be put in dry dock in Greece while its engine difficulty is assessed.

In the meantime, Triton will undertake its programme in the Caribbean, which is aimed at the US market.
