Guernsey sets date for talks over tourism

Guernsey is holding a parliamentary debate on April 5 to discuss its tourism industry.

The debate will focus on the importance of the industry to the local economy and how much should be invested in tourism.

States of Guernsey Tourist Board chief executive Chris Brock said it is imperative the government realises how crucial tourism is and the need to market Guernsey domestically and internationally.

He said: “Tourism competition is increasing and we are in danger of falling between neither being a domestic resort or an international destination.”

Around 450,000 tourists visit the Guernsey region each year, 70% coming from the UK, compared to 90% 10 years ago. In addition, one in five members of the community are directly or indirectly employed by tourism
