abta fights change to school holidays

A GOVERNMENT proposal to end the
school holidays before the August bank holiday is being fought by ABTA.

The association is in a series of
meetings with the Department of Education to lobby for changes to plans to
bring in a six-term school year from 2004. Talks are also under way about the
problem of parents taking kids out of school during term to take advantage of
cheaper holidays.

ABTA head
of policy Stephen Alcock said: “The six-term year will happen, but there is
concern over the summer holiday ending before the bank holiday.” He added it
was crucial dates were finalised soon as operators were in the early stages of
planning 2004 brochures.
