MYTRAVEL bosses are believed to be drawing up a ‘hit
list’ of senior staff likely to be axed as part of the group’s cost-saving
efforts, Travel Weekly can reveal.
Managers thought to have contributed to the company’s
disastrous 2002 are threatened with the chop, along with a number of department
heads deemed ‘surplus to requirements’.
The redundancies are expected as part of the
full-scale business review currently being undertaken by chief operating
officer Philip Jansen and new finance director Kazia Kantor. The company has
made no secret of the fact it is looking to make ‘swingeing savings’ across its
business.
But true to their word, executives have underlined
their pledge that retail staff are safe.
“Yes, there will be job cuts at senior level, but not
at shop level,” said a senior MyTravel source. “We need every bit of
distribution we can get at the moment.”
Rivals are also convinced jobs will go under any
cost-cutting exercise.
One said: “When Peter McHugh went to Pan Am he slashed
jobs and that’s probably what he’ll do at MyTravel. Redundancies are the only
way to cut costs. It could even be 10%.”
A MyTravel spokeswoman said:
“This is pure speculation. Obviously we are having to watch every penny, but
it’s grossly unfair to be talking about job losses.”
