Virgin to recruit 1,500 new staff

Virgin Atlantic is to recruit 1,500 staff over the next 18 months to support the airline’s continued growth.

The carrier launches a twice-weekly Gatwick-Havana route next month and weekly Gatwick-Nassau flight. Increased services to Shanghai, Las Vegas, Orlando and Port Harcourt in Nigeria will also operate this summer, with new routes to Dubai and Jamaica to be launched in 2006.

It will also expand its fleet to 39 aircraft next year, with the addition of seven Airbus A340-600. Its Caribbean capacity will increase by 27% this year.

Chairman Sir Richard Branson said: “We are delighted to announced that Virgin Atlantic is continuing its expansion plans with the recruitment of 1,500 staff and the addition of more exciting destinations to its route network.”

The new roles are mainly operational staff, with 1,100 cabin-crew positions, 100 head office staff, 150 flight-deck roles and 150 at Heathrow and Gatwick. Around 1,000 will be new positions, while the remainder represents the natural turnover of staff.

Virgin employs 8,500 staff worldwide.
