CANCUN’S main beach is being rebuilt as operators return for business following last year’s devastating Hurricane Wilma.
Mexico Tourist Board director for Europe and UK Manuel Diaz Cebrian said work to replace a seven-and-a-half-mile stretch of beach swept away by waves will begin on Monday at a cost of $20 million.
He said it should be finished by the end of April, adding: “The Mexican government has created a trusteeship that will be in charge of the maintenance of the beach on a permanent basis to fix it if this happens again.”
Meanwhile, Cosmos is re-instating its Mexico programme on February 5 with weekly Gatwick and Manchester flight. Prices are around 10% cheaper through to summer 2006 as a result of hoteliers’ discounts.
Overseas purchasing, operations and specialist products director Hugh Morgan said: “It’s the lates and price-led markets that are the first to return to the area.”
Thomas Cook’s programme will also resume on February 5 with one flight a week.
MyTravel returned to Cancun on December 21 but admitted its programme has been halved to one weekly flight, while Thomson’s Cancun programme resumed on December 16, although some hotels remain closed. Price reductions are being passed on to customers.
First Choice’s programme resumed on December 13 with 80% of hotels featured open for business, although renegotiations with hoteliers have been over allocations, not rates.
