End of air travel chaos in sight

THE worst of the UK’s air travel crisis appears to be over after MI5 downgraded the UK threat level from ‘critical’ to ‘severe’.

Tightened security measures that required all but the most essential items to be checked in have been partly lifted, with one item of hand baggage now permitted on flights from the UK.

Liquids, with the exception of prescription medicines and baby food, remain banned.

BAA has said it will be unable to implement the changes at either Heathrow or Gatwick until early on Tuesday morning, however.

The continuing disruption is the result of an anti-terrorist operation last Thursday. Police foiled a plot to blow up several aircraft in mid-flight, prompting tightened security measures at airports across the country.

Passengers are still advised to check airline and airport websites before travelling, and if travelling from Gatwick or Heathrow to come prepared with essential items in a clear plastic bag.
