THE Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association is seeking urgent talks with Thomson after Trade Union Congress delegates unanimously voted to boycott the company unless it reviews its decision to close its Glasgow call centre.
TSSA general secretary Gerry Doherty hoped to begin negotiations today to avoid the redundancies of up to 450 of Thomson’s Scottish staff.
After the emergency motion was unanimously passed at the TUC conference on Wednesday, Doherty said failure by the operator to review its staff consultation would lead to a boycott backed by the UK’s seven million trade union members within a month.
He hoped Thomson would instead offer voluntary redundancies in call centres in Glasgow and Coventry, where Flights Warehouse and Thomsonfly staff are based and where 100 new jobs are to be created.
However, Doherty admitted: “It’s going to be difficult for Thomson to roll the decision back.”
A Thomson spokeswoman said: “We tried to contact the TSSA last week and remain open to discussions.”
