WTM: India develops ski and golf tourism – 9 Nov 2006

SKIERS and golfers are being wooed by India as the vast country branches out into new types of tourism.

Huge investment is being made in a new ski resort in the Himachal Pradesh region, which will join other resorts in the north of the country as India gears up to welcome skiers wanting a fresh experience.

Golfers are also being catered for with new courses as the country looks to increase its business and incentive market and business travel generally.

Speaking at World Travel Market, tourism minister Ambika Soni said: “There has been substantial investment in our infrastructure, with both the government and private business. We want to diversify into new segments and skiing, golf and the cruise industry is part of this.”

India is also trying to push its year-round appeal with a new focus on activity holidays like rafting and trekking and old colonial hill stations.

The country is also working with Bollywood to promote itself to UK audiences through a national tour, which ends in London in December. Agents are being encouraged to enter a World Travel Market competition to win tickets.
