Aviation union T&G to merge with Amicus – 9 March 2007

Aviation trade union the Transport and General Workers Union is to merge with Amicus to form the biggest union in the country.

Eighty-six percent of T&G members voted in favour of the deal along with 70% of Amicus members, however the ballot only had a 27% turnout.

T&G has been heavily involved in a number of aviation disputes in recent year, particularly at British Airways.

Meanwhile, the union is calling for the National Minimum Wage to be massively increased after the Government announced plans to raise it by only 17p in October this year.

The NMW for adults will increase from £5.37p to £5.52p. The T&G has called for the NMW for Londoners to be increased to £7.30 to make it a “living wage”.

“The latest rise can hardly be called generous,” T&G secretary Tony Woodley said.
