Unions agree to BA’s Terminal 5 move – 30 May 2007

British Airways has predicted its move to Heathrow Terminal 5 next March will be free from the threat of industrial action after 6,000 ground staff voted to accept new work practices.

Check-in and customer service staff became the last group to say yes to the changes in a ballot, following separate votes by baggage handlers, loaders, tug drivers and others.

The airline and unions have been in talks on the move for 18 months.

BA chief executive Willie Walsh expressed delight. “We have reached this milestone with the full co-operation of our unions,” he said.

A spokesman for the T&G section of union Unite said: “The move should herald a new era for BA, but we will continue to ensure there are no compulsory job losses.”

BA believes the deal will put an end to a turbulent few months – which included the chaos around security last August, delays due to fog at Christmas, a threatened strike by cabin crew in January and a furore about new charges for hold baggage.
