BRITISHMidland chairman Sir Michael Bishop has slammed joint applications from British Airways and American Airlines to codeshare to 75 destinations in the UK, US, mainland Europe and Africa.
He is unhappy British Midland continues to be blocked from launching UK-US flights under bilateral rules, while BA and American seek to enhance their already strong position.
“It is inconceivable that two companies with more than 60% of transatlantic flights from Heathrow should be allowed to co-ordinate their activities whilst new entrants are prohibited from entering the market,” said Sir Michael.
British Midland is hoping talks between the UK and US, scheduled to resume next month after last week’s reportedly productive sessions, will recommend allowing the airline special rights to fly to the US.
