Taking a gamble to raise the stakes

LAS Vegas rolls into town next week with one of its largest delegations yet. The stand space has been increased by 25% on last year and red dice will feature prominently to reflect the city’s status as the world’s top gaming resort.

But Las Vegas is now recognised as being more than just the US’s favourite gambling centre, with Broadway-type shows and other entertainment rivalling that of New York.

Agreater number of hotel representatives will be attending WTM this year following the opening of more mega casino resorts along The Strip.

These range from the Paris and Venetian to exclusive properties such as the Resort at Summerlin, Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton.

Another major hotel opening in December is the Hyatt Lake Las Vegas – a 496-room Mediterranean-style resort terraced into the hillside on a 21-acre site along the north shore of Nevada’s largest privately-owned lake and surrounded by an 18-hole golf course.

Other hotels represented at WTM for the first time this year include The Aladdin, Bellagio, the MGM, the Mirage and the Venetian.

Also on the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Association stand will be representatives from other themed resort properties including Bally’s, Circus Circus, Excalibur, Luxor and Mandalay Bay.

Companies represented at WTM include Air Vegas, Heli USA, Scenic Airlines and Sundance Heilcopters.

A spokeswoman from UK representative for LVCVA, Cellet Travel Services, said: “Volumes from the UK continue to grow, with all major tour operators reporting exceptional figures to the entertainment capital of the world.

“Gaming remains the favourite past-time of visitors, but golf and outdoor recreational facilities are becoming increasingly popular. Las Vegas now has over 35 world-class golf courses.”
