MEPs have given the initial go ahead to new proposals to amend the code of conduct for the computerised reservation systems used by travel agents.
The changes are aimed at allowing for more competition in the sector, with airlines and global distribution systems being allowed to negotiate the conditions of air distribution services.
A condition to this is that carriers who have a share in a GDS must provide the same information to all GDSs. The report also requires GDSs to provide train travel as an alternative and more information on CO2 emissions.
Now that ministers have adopted the first report, it willbe sent for approval to the Council of Ministers. European Parliament rapporteur Timony Kirkshope expects the regulation to be agreed by the end of the year and put in place in time for next summer’s bookings.
He said: “The new code is designed to reenergise the travel sector. The sooner it comes in, the sooner it can provide lower air fares, more choice and greater transparency.”
