An apology has been issued after Chinese tourists were taken on an unauthorised stop near Grenfell Tower to take photographs of the site of the tragedy.
In the latest example of so-called disaster tourism, a bus carrying Chinese visitors was seen stopping on a road yards from the west London tower, which was engulfed by a blaze in June with the loss of up to 80 lives.
The passengers were seen getting out to take photographs of the blackened shell, before getting back on the bus and being taken away.
When asked what they were doing, the coach driver claimed that the visitors were health and safety experts from China, The Times reported.
BM Coaches, which supplied the vehicle, said that the driver had been suspended and the tour guide sent back to China after news of the stop on Wednesday emerged.
The company, which said the stop was not part of the itinerary, also made a donation to the official Grenfell Fund by way of an apology.
James Buckingham, operations director at the coach hire company, said: “I would like to apologise most sincerely on behalf of BM Coaches for the insensitive actions of the group we were contracted to supply transportation to.”
