Flights suspended at Birmingham airport as snow closes runway

Flights in and out of Birmingham airport were temporarily suspended this morning as heavy snow hit the midlands.

The overnight wintry weather caused travel disruption across a swathe of central and western England including the closure of the M1 southbound at Lutterworth.

Birmingham airport tweeted: Flights are temporarily suspended at #bhx to clear the runway following heavy snowfall. Please check our website for updates or contact your airline for further information.”

A spokesman for the airport told The Metro newspaper: “We have temporarily suspended flights whilst we clear the runway.

“Our teams are working hard to get flights in/out as soon as they can and we will keep the website up to date with latest information.

“We advise you to leave more time for your journey to the airport. We apologise for any delays suffered but safety is our number one priority.

Travellers hoping to use the airport today were told to leave plenty of time and to check with their airlines about departures and arrivals.
