Tui has seen a “return” for Egypt in bookings so far this January, which its chief executive described as the company’s best in its history.
Fritz Joussen also said Turkey bookings are “strong” and that, from the UK, there has been significant demand for Croatia and Bulgaria with Tunisia creeping back into the fold.
Joussen said: “January is the strongest trading month in our business. We are up 8% in terms of revenue and 6% in terms of bookings.
“It’s the best January we’ve had in the company’s history.”
He added: “Egypt is an important destination, we’ve seen the return of Egypt is quite significant.
“In bookings, we are seeing a return to Turkey too. These are very big destinations.”
From the UK, he said bookings to Croatia were “very strong” and to Bulgaria were “quite strong”.
On Tunisia, which went back on sale in early January, Joussen said: “We opened the destination because demand was there. We are not on a mission, but demand is there.”
Joussen talked down the effect of a weak pound in the rise in booking to the destinations, which don’t use the Euro.
He said there was a “new normal” value of the pound and that although British tourists had felt the change in value it had been roughly in place for two peak booking seasons now and “seems to be OK.”
