Flight disruption is expected to intensify today as more snow and ice blankets large parts of the UK.
Flights have been cancelled from a number of airports, including Heathrow and Norwich, following a raft of cancellations yesterday.
The East Anglian airport was shut until 9am this morning to allow for runway clearing and de-icing.
British Airways is among airlines proactively reducing flight schedules at Heathrow for “several hours” during the worst of the winter storm today.
The airline cancelled more than 40 flights from the west London hub on Tuesday and warned of further disruption as freezing temperatures continue.
“We are keeping flights for later in the week under regular review depending on the latest weather forecasts we are receiving,” BA said.
“It is likely at times we will have to proactively cancel some services and rebook customers on to alternative flights. Customers on cancelled services can also claim a full refund if they no longer wish to travel.
“We are sorry for the potential disruption to your travel plans and are doing all we can to minimise the effect the poor weather may have on our flights.”
Gatwick said this morning that flights are departing and arriving as normal.
The airport told passengers: “There has been some snowfall and more is expected, so we recommend that you check the status of your flight with your airline and allow extra time for your journey to the airport.”
Travellers using Stansted were urged to check traffic updates and plan their journey to and from the airport accordingly due to the adverse weather.
This came after early morning Stansted Express rail services from London were axed yesterday due to the extreme winter weather.
London City airport flights were being held this morning due to overnight snow.
“There will be disruption to some flights so passengers are advised to check with their airline before travel,” the airport said.
