Financial support, peace of mind and product knowledge remain the key benefits of working with tour operators for a travel agent.
Speaking at the Association of Independent Tour Operators Specialist Travel Agents conference in Gdansk, Poland, Kitts Travel director Andrew Rowdon said financial support, particularly in marketing and commission payments is key to the relationship.
He added agents should not be afraid to ask operators for financial assistance for advertising campaigns or promotional evenings if they are confident they can generate sales as a result.
Rowdon said: “A lot of agents are frightened to approach tour operators about advertising [funds].
“As agents we’re in a very strong position to control what goes on. Tour operators also need to be aware that it is important to have that understanding.”
He added educational trips were another effective spend for tour operators, and he urged agency bosses attending the conference to ensure staff attend them.
Rowdon also urged agents and operators to continue working together for the benefit of all.
Rowdon said: “We’ve all got USPs and we need to highlight what we do well, and it is important for tour operators to help us.
“We all have to work together and not be frightened to talk to each other.”
