Joint funding maintains Newquay-Gatwick air link

Public subsidy has secured an air link between London and Cornwall for a further four years.

Flybe will maintain service with up to three flights a day on weekdays connecting Gatwick and Newquay under a Public Service Obligation agreement. Two flights a day will run at weekends.

The government and Cornwall Council are jointly backing continuation of the service with funding.

Demand for the flights has almost doubled in three years, with the Gatwick connection now accounting for 40% of all passengers using Newquay airport.

The funding has further increased confidence in the airport, with other airlines operating new routes from Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Stuttgart, according to the Department for Transport.

Public Service Obligation routes are used to subsidise vital air connections and economic and social development in peripheral regions, where a clear business case is put forward.
