Carnival Cruise Line guests and staff have donated more than $350,000 to two organisations supporting Bahamas relief efforts after Hurricane Dorian battered the northern part of the island nation with winds of up to 185mph on September 1.

Around 1,300 people are still missing, while at least 15,000 are in need of shelter, food and medical care.

Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises are resuming sailings to the Bahamas with more than 250 ship calls planned by the end of the year. The cruises will bring passengers and business to Nassau and the company’s private island destinations, Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays.

Carnival Corporation previously announced that its philanthropic arm, Carnival Foundation, its nine global cruise line brands and the Micky and Madeleine Arison Family Foundation have pledged to donate $2 million in funding and in-kind support for relief efforts in the Bahamas.

A spokesman said: “The outpouring of support for our friends in the Bahamas has been so touching, and so many people and organisations have stepped up asking how they can get involved.

“We want to publicly thank everyone who has made donations for their efforts, support and genuine concern for our friends and neighbours in the Bahamas.

“Through our partnership with Tropical Shipping, we are able to ship much-needed supplies directly to the Bahamas National Emergency Management Agency in Freeport for distribution to the thousands of Bahamians lacking food, water and life’s most essential needs.”
