A general alert for Sri Lanka has been issued after a monsoon deluge caused flooding across much of the country.
The warning came from the country’s Centre for Disaster Management.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said in an updated travel advisory for Sri Lanka: “Heavy rains and landslides can also lead to road closures and affect local transport links.
“If you’re travelling in the area, you should check local advice when planning your journey.
“Sri Lanka can be affected by severe weather such as like tropical cyclones and monsoon rains.
“A general alert has been issued by the Centre for Disaster Management over the onset of the South Western Monsoon – check local advice before setting out.”
The flooding across many parts of the island nation comes as it seeks to rebuild tourism confidence following mass terrorist attacks on hotels and churches which killed more than 250 people on Easter Sunday.
Security has since been stepped up and the Sri Lankan Department of Immigration & Emigration agreed to exempt British holidaymakers from paying visa fees for visits of up to 30 days until January 31, 2020.
