WTM 2010 preview: Latin America stands

Machu Picchu, Peru

Brazil LA550

You can be sure of a warm welcome on the Brazilian stand this year as the exhibitors celebrate winning the right to host both the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games.

The Brazilian tourist board, Embratur, will be regaling visitors to stand LA550 with news from the 12 host cities for the World Cup, along with details of what each of its diverse regions has to offer UK visitors.

An impressive 172,600 Britons visited the country in 2009, and with new investment in hotel and infrastructure, and advertising ahead of the two major sporting events, the future looks bright.

Embratur will also be holding cocktail parties on its stand – one on Monday at 4pm and another at 3.30pm on the Wednesday – to launch the Embassy of Brazil’s new brochure for the Northeast of Brazil, and to celebrate the new Iberia service from Heathrow to Recife and Fortaleza, via Madrid.

Peru LA300

PromPeru will give visitors a sneak peek at plans to promote next year’s celebrations for the 100-year anniversary of the rediscovery of Machu Picchu, as well as promoting areas such as responsible travel.

Visitors can also find out the latest from Orient-Express, Libertador Hotels, whose Westin Libertador will open its doors next year, and Amazonas Explorer, which is launching a new programme for 2011, Teen Adventure Peru.

Feeling thirsty? Every hour on the hour, I’m told, will be pisco hour on the Peru stand. Don’t miss your chance to sample the tasty traditional tipple, pisco sour.

PromPeru will also be running agent seminars on the Thursday. These will cover the Moche Route (10.30am), Spa & Wellness (11.30am), Adventure Travel (2pm) and Ecotourism (3pm).

Cancun LA150

Agents can also expect a party atmosphere on the stand of the Cancun Convention & Visitors’ Bureau, ahead of the launch of the BA flight to the region this month.

Lan Airlines LA530

Meanwhile, Lan Airlines has teamed with the Latin American Travel Association to host a conference on ‘New Opportunities and Market Trends in Argentina, Chile, Ecuador and Peru’.

The event, which is open to all delegates, will take place on Tuesday at 10am, with tourism boards showcasing recent developments and initiatives.

Central America LA250

Other airline exhibitors this year include Iberia, on the Central America Tourism Agency stand, which will be showcasing its new Madrid-El Salvador service and new direct flights from Madrid to Panama.

Other exhibitors

Other exhibitors include Explora (LA500), which will be promoting its three high-end hotels, located in Patagonia, Atacama and Rapa Nui, and revealing plans for celebrating Chile’s bicentennial next year.
