Puerto Rico will be working with more UK tour operators when British Airways returns to the Caribbean island next year.
BA is to launch twice-weekly flights from March and Puerto Rico Tourism Company sales director Marimar Lidin said talks were under way with Abercrombie & Kent and Kuoni to feature the country.
“Puerto Rico is not well known to British consumers or the travel trade. These flights will open a lot of doors and we want to increase the number of operators we work with and ensure we educate the trade through fam trips and training,” she said.
Approximately 25,000 Brits visit the island every year and the country intends to increase this by 30% every year.
Lidin said Puerto Rico does not want to follow in the footsteps of its charter flight, all-inclusive sisters in the Caribbean. She said the most important sector was the higher end of the market and she wanted to push its Spanish roots to the forefront in its campaigns.
With BA flights in place, she expected to see more high-end hotel groups showing interest in the country, joining the likes of W and St Regis, which opened earlier this year.
