Nationwide strike shuts Greek ports and airports

Airports, ports and the public transport network in Greece were shut today as protestors against austerity measures staged a nationwide walkout.

Flights to and from the country were grounded and ships remained docked in ports.

With public transport crippled, major roads to the centre of Athens looked like huge parking lots as motorists struggled to get to work, according to local reports.

Workers are also due to rally against austerity in other countries today including Spain and Belgium, ahead of a summit of EU leaders in Brussels on Thursday and Friday.

Public and private sector unions in Greece are demonstrating against government plans to push through tough measures in return for a 110 billion euro EU/IMF bailout.
