Walking safari introduced in Tanzania

The Selous Safari Camp in the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania has introduced a bush walking safari package for guests who want to stay off the 4×4 trail.

Available to people staying in the main camp for more than two nights, the safari is designed to get guests closer to hippos, elephants, impala and giraffe while exploring the terrain at grass roots level.

The adventure starts with a cruise across Lake Nzerakera to the satellite camp site, where guests settle in for a one or two night stay, sleeping under the stars in traditional canvas tents, complete with mosquito nets, comfortable mattresses, crisp linen and hot “bucket” showers.

Accompanied by an expert guide, the emphasis of the walking safaris is on ecology, tracking, dung identification, medicinal uses of trees, birding and many other aspects of the bush which are often neglected when driving in a vehicle.

On return, guests can choose to walk back to camp or take the boat across the lake, with a chance to see the resident crocodiles and hippos.

The camp is situated on the shores of Lake Nzerakera, a large lake which adjoins the Rufiji River in the Selous Game Reserve.

It comprises 13 en suite tents, each under its own thatched roof and set on raised platforms which are spaced along the lakeside ensuring maximum privacy and idyllic views.

The bush walking safari is available for a maximum of six adults (over 16) and must be booked in advance and as part of a package through a tour operator.

Tanzania Odyssey is offering five nights at the Selous Safari Camp including a one-night bush camping trip from £2,750pp between July 1 and October 31 2011.
