Unite to declare BA strike ballot invalid

Trade union Unite is believed ready to call off immediate plans for renewed strikes by British Airways cabin crew pending a decision on whether to re-ballot its members.

BA confirmed last week it had written to Unite and to Electoral Reform Services, which oversees trade union ballots, to express concern about the recent vote by cabin crew to renew strike action.

The airline denied it had launched a legal challenge. A BA spokesman told Travel Weekly: “All we have done is highlight our concerns about how the ballot was conducted.”

It is understood union officials have accepted there were irregularities. Under the ballot completed on January 21, Unite had until this Friday to name the dates for strikes or it would require a fresh ballot before crew could take official action.

A further ballot would push any renewed action by cabin crew into March or early April.

Conciliation service Acas has been attempting to arrange a meeting between BA management and Unite officials.
