Ryanair flights switch due to Libya intervention

Ryanair has been forced to switch flights between airports in Sicily due to the military action against Libya.

Flights to Trapani airport on the west coast have been suspended due to military use in support of the no-fly zone over Libya. Other airlines using the airport include Alitalia/AirOne and Meridiana.

Ryanair flights have been moved to Palermo airport, about 55 miles north east. The airline indicated that 32 scheduled arrivals and 28 departures were affected. Passengers are being notified by emails and text messages.

Ryanair flies to Trapani from Stansted, Brussels, Frankfurt and a range of Italian cities. The carrier said that it had been advised that Trapani airport will be closed to civilian air traffic due to the ongoing military action in Libya.

“Consequently, all Ryanair flights scheduled to operate to/from Trapani between the March 21-28 inclusive will now operate to/from Palermo Airport which is 55 miles from Trapani Airport (one hour driving time).”

A statement on the airport’s website said: “Due to the war in Libya, Trapani Airport is temporarily closed to civil flights.”
