Holiday search patterns for early June indicate a desire for guaranteed sunshine away from home is the priority over patriotism over the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend.
Spain and Malaga in particular are the top preferred destinations for short breaks during the Jubilee four-day weekend on June 2-5, according to price comparison website Dealchecker.
Flights to Faro, Alicante, Majorca, Tenerife, Bodrum and Ibiza are also proving popular.
Managing director Mark Attwell said: “Malaga has been an enduringly popular holiday destination for many years, but on long weekends the tradition for Brits is more often a UK break.
“The luxury of four additional days off this year, brought about by the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee seems to be tempting us into jetting abroad rather than staying at home.
“The dwindling cost of flights to Mediterranean destinations has been inviting more and more holidaymakers to head to the Med for their holidays, from long two-week stays to shorter jaunts for some weekend sunshine.
“As prices for flights and accommodation continue to drop, we foresee that more travellers will be choosing to spend their long weekends in exciting overseas destinations rather than staycationing.”
