Travel agent hopes song could go on sale in supermarkets

A travel agent and operator is hoping a song he recorded after winning Royal Caribbean’s Cruise Idol competition could go on sale through major high-street supermarkets after attracting the backing of the Alzheimer’s Society.

Ian Calvert, managing director of Have A Nice Stay Travel in Plymouth, which specialises in putting together bespoke cruise holidays, said it would be a dream come true if the song, Never Forget, raises significant amounts for the society.

Two years ago Calvert’s father-in-law John Cramb died of the disease and after hospital visits Calvert wrote down his thoughts over a 18-month period. But it was only at the end of last year, when Calvert won the finals of Royal Caribbean’s agent cruise idol contest and got the chance to spend a day in a recording studio, that he was able to convert his writing into song lyrics. “It gave me a chance to use a studio. I felt this was fate,” said Calvert, a former radio and TV presenter.

Calvert said it was possible the song could go on sale in supermarket chains if it gets released with the help of the Alzheimer’s Society,

“We will discuss whether supermarkets could take it on board as the age group this song targets are less likely to download it,” said Calvert, who has already signed over the rights of the song to the society.

The next step will be to secure a record label and Calvert is also hopeful to get endorsement from celebrities with Alzheimer’s or whose families have been struck by the disease.
