Tourist resorts on the coast of Tenerife have escaped damage as fire crews battle a wildfire in the interior.
The blaze is reported to have reached the edge of the Teide National Park although it is not threatened, emergency services spokeswoman Carmina Lorenzo told the Associated Press.
Helicopters were being used to dump water onto the hillsides affected. The fire has affected around 12 square miles since Sunday and forced the evacuation of at least 1,800 people from the town of Vilaflor.
Residents of the village of Chirche were also evacuated on Wednesday due to strong smoke from the fires, local media reports say.
Another fire on the neighbouring island of La Palma which spread over around 500 hectares was brought under control on Tuesday afternoon.
