A new Crowne Plaza in London is to be opened by InterContinental Hotels Group in spring 2015.
The 130-room hotel will be built on the Albert Embankment, an area undergoing regeneration to the south of the River Thames.
The development will create 100 full and part-time jobs, according to IHG chief development officer Robert Shepherd.
The hotel will be aimed at “ambitious business travellers” and is being described as a new hub for meetings, conferences and events in the capital.
The upscale property will be operated under a franchise agreement with new partner Cannon Corporate UK and follows the announcement of an InterContinental-branded hotel to open at the O2 in Greenwich, also in 2015.
Cannon Corporate owner and director Mudhar Shawkat said: “Crowne Plaza London – Albert Embankment will be an asset to London. The need for fully equipped business minded hotels is ever increasing and we’re looking forward to providing a wonderful hotel experience to our guests.”
IHG already has more than 50 hotels in London including the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express brands.
The Crowne Plaza global portfolio has doubled since 2003 to nearly 400 hotels, with a further 97 in the pipeline due to open in the next three to five years.
Shepherd said: “We have an enormous opportunity to build on what has already been achieved in London and we are showing no signs of slowing down.
“The UK market offers a wealth of development opportunities that are yet to be realised. This hotel is a great example of IHG’s growth here and a strong sign of confidence in our brands.”
He told Travel Weekly that properties that came under control of the banks during the recession were beginning to be released, creating opportunities “to put our brand on properties that have struggled”.
Demand for hotels in London remains strong although achieving required rates per room has been difficult.
However, Shepherd said: “We should be in a good position to drive up rates next year and going forward.”
Bookings for the Crowe Plaza London – Albert Embankment are due to be available a year before the hotel opens.
