A Danish tourist is reported to have been gang-raped near a popular central shopping area in the Indian capital of Delhi.

She had lost her way and asked for directions back to her hotel, police said.

The 51-year-old woman was robbed and beaten in the attack, police spokesman Rajan Bhagat told the Associated Press

The woman managed to reach her hotel Tuesday evening and the owner called police. No arrests have been made.

Between January and October last year, 1,330 rapes were reported in Delhi and its suburbs, compared with 706 for all of 2012, according to government figures.

A Swiss woman who was cycling with her husband in central India was gang-raped last March.

In response to these cases and the threat to India’s lucrative tourism industry, the tourism ministry launched an “I Respect Women” campaign last year to reassure travellers.
