At least 2,900 flights were cancelled and almost 5,000 delayed as the latest in a series of heavy winter snowstorms hit the US East Coast.
The Washington DC area saw the worst concentration of flight cancellations on Monday with 80% of flights at Washington’s Reagan National airport affected.
As much as a foot of snow was expected in some areas in the fifth winter snowstorm to hit the eastern US since the star of the year.
The storm is forecast to be followed by near-record low temperatures today (Tuesday).
Freezing weather conditions warnings were in place from the Canadian border all the way down to Texas.
Snow clogged up highways and local roads in the US mid-Atlantic region during yesterday morning and early afternoon, having already brought a mix of freezing rain and snow to the Midwestern states.
About 30,000 homes and businesses in Memphis, Tennessee, were without power after heavy sleet covered the area.
The governors of New Jersey, Delaware, Mississippi and Tennessee declared states of emergency, and schools and local governments throughout those areas were closed.
