Thailand curfew lifted but caution still urged

A curfew imposed by Thailand’s military council since a coup last month was been lifted across in all parts of the country on Friday.

Bangkok-based Diethlem Travel said: “Whilst protests have stopped, we continue to advise visitors to avoid any political gatherings, rallies and marches – should they occur.”

It is illegal to criticise the coup and British travellers to the country should be wary of making political statements in public, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advised.

“Some anti-coup demonstrations are taking place in Bangkok and some other cities. These could become violent,” the FCO said.

“You should exercise extreme caution and remain alert to the situation. If you’re in any doubt about your safety, stay in your accommodation. You should avoid all protests sites, political gatherings, demonstrations and marches.”

The lifting of the night time curfew – between midnight and 4am – has been expected for some time as the situation in the country is calm and everyday life is going on as normal for tourists as well as local residents, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

“It is not expected that any further curfews will be imposed,” TAT said.

TAT governor Thawatchai Arunyik said: “The nationwide lifting of the curfew shows the world that things are moving forward here in Thailand and that tourism has not been disrupted.

“This latest announcement by the National Council for Peace and Order should help reassure everyone coming for a holiday in Thailand or to enjoy the country’s shopping, dining and nightlife attractions that it’s business as usual and that the famous Siamese smile has not dimmed.”
