Cruise ports of Southampton and Hamburg gain air link

The cruise ports of Southampton and Hamburg are to gain an air link for the fist time this winter.

Flybe is to start a daily service from October 26 with one-way fares starting at £49.99.

The airline’s routes from Southampton to Alicante, Malaga and Faro have been extended to operate into early November to accommodate half-term travel.

The services to the two Spanish destinations will continue on as part of Flybe’s 2014-15 winter schedule out of the south coast airport.

All the flights will be operated by Flybe’s 118-seat Embraer 195 jet aircraft.

Increased flights to Dublin will operate during winter up to four times a day, and routes to regional France will also be boosted with the addition of a twice weekly service to La Rochelle complementing existing winter routes to Bergerac, Nantes, Rennes and Limoges.

Ski flights to Grenoble, Geneva and Chambery will also be re-established for the winter.

Southampton airport managing director Dave Lees said: “Hamburg is a city that has strong business links to Southampton. We know that there are growing cruise links between these two major European ports, and there are many aerospace and marine industry links in both regions.

“It is also very popular as a short break destination with lively nightlife, great shopping, restaurants and harbour tours.

Flybe’s 2014-15 winter schedule from Southampton covers 23 routes with up to 558 flights a week.

The airline’s UK route director Fred Kochak said: “Our new daily service to Hamburg is ideally timed in the evening, so business people can take advantage of a full day’s work in northern Germany.

“This new route, as well as our winter extensions to popular leisure destinations in Spain and France, reaffirms Flybe’s commitment to providing a whole range of destinations in the UK, Channel Islands and continental Europe.”
