Trailfinders sees profits increase by £10 million

Profits at Trailfinders are reported to have increased by more than £10 million last year to £30 million on the back of retired people travelling to far flung destinations.

Managing director Tony Russell said retirees were eschewing traditional destinations and taking off to countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Burma.

Russell described the over-55s sector as a “huge part” of the company’s market.

“People used to think of us as just for students, but those days are long gone. It’s the older generation who are really fuelling the boom in long-haul travel,” he said.

Saying that the company was on track for another record year in 2014, Russell put the performance down to increased levels of customer care and 27 high street stores with a focus on helping to plan complex itineraries.

“The more complex a trip, the less effective the web becomes,” the told the Mail on Sunday.

“We took the decision years ago not to sell online and everything since then tells us that was right.”

Popular areas include South America, Indochina and Burma as well as US fly-drive holidays.

Turnover rose from £531 million to £566 million in the year to February 28, 2013, with profits up from £19.3 million to £30 million.
