Britons have been urged to avoid travel to islands off the eastern Malaysian state of Sabah after gunmen stormed a dive resort, killing a policeman and kidnapping another.

The assault occurred on Saturday night at the Mabul Water Bungalows Resort on the island of Mabul, off the coast of Borneo.

The kidnappers are reported to have escaped by boat towards the Philippines where Muslin militants have carried out similar raids.

The gunman could have been planning to kidnap a guest at the resort or were targeting police.

The FCO has reported abductions from another resort off Sabah in April while a Taiwanse tourist was killed and his wife kidnapped from another resort in the region in November.
