Airlines face Russian airspace ban

European and US airlines face the threat of a ban on flying over Russia to Asia.

Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev said that Moscow was considering banning transit flights, Reuters reported.

Medvedev said a final decision on whether to ban the flights by EU and US airlines had not been taken. Transit flights for Ukrainian airlines via Russia’s territory have already been banned.

Low-cost Russian airline Dobrolyot stopped flying recently after being sanctioned by the European Union.

Russia is to ban fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, milk and dairy imports from the US, EU, Australia, Canada and Norway for a year in response to western sanctions over Russia’s support of rebels in eastern Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea.
