Murder investigation launched after deaths of British tourists in Thailand

Police say they are looking for a number of suspects linked to the double murder of two British tourists on a beach in Thailand.

The semi-naked bodies of 23-year-old Hannah Witheridge, from Norfolk, and David Miller, 24, from Jersey, were discovered on Koh Tao.

The pair suffered serious head injuries, thought to have been caused by a hoe, which police found nearby.

At first Thai police said they wanted to speak to a British friend of the pair but they now claim to have ruled out other British tourists.

However, Thai police are thought to be wanting to speak to a British man, Sky News reported.

The local pier in Koh Tao was blocked off to prevent anyone leaving the island however it is thought he may have already left and travelled to Bangkok.

Police are said to have changed tack in their investigation and are focusing their investigations on the local Burmese community on the island. CCTV footage is being examined.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said the incident was isolated but admitted the it may impact the tourism industry on the island.

“This may have an impact on tourists travel plans so we suggest they contact their travel agent, tour operator or chosen hotel for further advice.”

TAT said the “isolated incident” was “very much out of character for an island which is much loved for its quaint atmosphere”.
