The Imaginative Traveller: a 19-day exploration of the Middle Kingdom from Beijing to Hong Kong which includes stays in Xi’an, the walled town of Keifang, Guilin, Canton and a four-day cruise on the Yangtse. Accommodation is in guest houses, budget hotels and sleeper trains. Prices start from £1,335.


Hayes and Jarvis: a three-day tour to Canton from Hong Kong which includes a trip by catamaran up the Peal River, sightseeing around Canton, and shopping expeditions. The cost is £229 including two nights accommodation, two dinners and three lunches.


Airwaves: a 10-day Red Arrow Express itinerary which combines three nights in Beijing with three nights in Hong Kong. Travel between the two cities is by a 36-hour train journey through rural China in deluxe or first-class sleeping compartments. Prices start at £600.


Kuoni: a three-centre eight-day itinerary combining Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, or a four-centre 11-day itinerary which also includes the Chinese city of Xi’an. Prices start from £951 for the three-centre on a room-only basis, or from £1,249 for the four-centre which includes some meals.


British Airways Holidays: combines four nights in Hong Kong with three nights in Beijing. Prices start from £869 including international and domestic flights.
