Tornado kills 13 in northern Mexico

At least 13 people have died and dozens more were injured after a tornado ripped through northern Mexico this morning.

The government said the tornado flipped cars over and knocked down homes in Ciudad Acuna.

Among the dead were three children as the whirlwind damaged an estimated 750 homes in the city across the Rio Grande from Del Rio, Texas, said Jesus Garcia, spokesman for the local state of Coahuila.

The whirlwind travelled at a speed of some 31mph and blew gusts over 124mph, the government said.

President Enrique Pena Nieto said there was no satellite warning to indicate the tornado, the country’s strongest in 15 years, was approaching.

Damage was caused to a 1.8km stretch of the city. and several citizens are still missing.
