Technical background

In a previous article I referred to the ‘VisionDome’, a large-screen display system for interaction with computer generated worlds and projection of live images.

I’ve just returned from a short visit to see the latest developments at Alternate Realities Corporation, and it seemed appropriate to provide an update.

Developments in immersive displays such as the VisionDome are clearly of immediate relevance for applications such as trade shows and high-end entertainment venues. However, rapidly declining hardware costs will soon make them much more widely accessible, and large-screen displays will be a common feature in shops and offices.

Similar large-screen immersive displays are also available from a number of other suppliers including Trimension and Panoram. Most current commercial systems use three or more projectors to give greater brightness and resolution than can be achieved with a single projector solution. Whilst essential to achieve adequate performance in most current applications, with advances in projector and screen technology this approach is likely to prove expensive and less stable in the long-term.
