Gatwick’s long-haul ambitions have suffered a setback with Caribbean Airlines withdrawing flights to Trinidad.
The Trinidad and Tobago carrier blamed the withdrawal of the service on the high costs of running Boeing 767 aircraft on the route to Port of Spain.
The route, which was launched three years ago, will end on January 10, 2016, the airline confirmed.
Caribbean Airlines said: “This has not been an easy decision, since the airline’s customers have loyally supported the London service especially in the peak periods.
“Unfortunately, the costs associated with maintaining the Boeing 767 aircraft operation, has led Caribbean Airlines to the decision of simplifying its fleet and focusing its limited resources to build connectivity in the North American and Caribbean markets.
“Caribbean Airlines will assist its valued customers with finding alternative travel arrangements to/from London, having communicated its plans to the other airlines serving this route.”
Passengers are being offered full refunds or re-allocation onto other services “where possible”.
