Hundreds of thousands of people have been advised to evacuate Florida as Hurricane Matthew approaches landfall in the US.
The storm, which is reported to have killed over 300 people in Haiti, will create “extremely dangerous life-threatening weather conditions” over the next 24 hours, according to forecasters.
Rick Scott, the governor of Florida has told 1.5 million people living in evacuation zones: “You need to leave. Evacuate, evacuate, evacuate.”
There is hope the state will avoid the worst of the storm as it tracked slightly east, but US media is reporting highways being jammed a local residents stream out of Florida.
The storm is the strongest the region has seen since 2004 and a state of emergency has been declared in Florida as it approaches.
Winds of up to 125 miles per hour were expected to hit Florida today after the category four storm pounded the Bahamas.
