MAJOR growth from low-cost carriers EasyJet and Debonair helped Luton Airport to register a record 4.4m passengers in the year to March 31 – up 29% on the 1997/98 figure.
Chief executive Frank Pullman said this highest ever number has helped Luton to double its passenger numbers in the last three years.
This financial year, the airport expects to handle 5mcustomers.
The low-cost airlines look set to continue playing a role in the airport’s growth, after their passenger numbers registered an increased of 48% over the last year, although exact figures were not available.
To cope with the expected increases, Luton is opening a new terminal next month.
